Indexing the Traditional Way

  PRICE: $3.75 PER PAGE FOR UP TO 6 X 9" BOOK; $5.25 PER PAGE UP TO 8-1/2 X 11"

  Our industry-proven indexers will do the following:

    • Examine the readership for your title to determine the appropriate level of indexing required.
    • Carefully read through the entire book, marking indexable entries.
    • Create a quality index, specifically engineered toward your audience for maximum usability.

  We recommend a quality index for all nonfiction books, especially:

    • Cookbooks
    • How-to books
    • Historical nonfiction
    • Travel books

  Upon finalization of your pagination, your page proofs will be forwarded to our indexing department for service. In most cases, an indented style (also known as stacked style) is appropriate. If another style is more appropriate, you will be notified. Once you have approved the text on your pages, your index will be carefully laid out and added to your final pages. All indexes are governed by the general guidelines set forth by The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition.

Indexing with Software from a Layout Program - $75.00

  It is also possible to create an index "mechanically" using a software program. This can be done if we did the layout for your text and works this way: the software program goes through the file and creates a list of all proper nouns. You review this list deleting whatever you do not want indexed (and you may add words too). Then the program "searches" for the words in this list and creates an index. This method is faster and less expensive than indexing the traditional way and is serviceable for most non-fiction books, but it is also not as thorough and is not recommended for scholarly works.
